May 19, 2015 - Inspired to Succeed, Despite Obstacles

Brenton Barmettler is not your average Universal Technical Institute graduate. Brenton attends school full time and is caring for his wife who was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer all while maintaining perfect attendance.

After his construction career slowed during the recession, he decided to go back to school and learn to fix diesel rigs, a job in demand.

Brenton graduated from the Diesel Truck program and has seen job interest, but is taking time off for his wife’s bucket list. Despite all the challenges, Brenton participated in his graduation ceremony and received his diploma while his family and wife cheered him on.

Brenton, 37, said going to school while trying to help his wife was the hardest thing he’s had to do, but even though he was faced with an obstacle he overcame it and graduated.

“I’m pretty excited to graduate,” Brenton said. “It’s a big change for me.”

Sacramento’s CBS affiliate, KOVR-TV, was there to capture Brenton’s special moment and the priceless reaction of his wife and family as his name was called. Special Projects Producer Brei Thompson attended the graduation and interviewed the couple about how Brenton was able to fulfill his dream of becoming a UTI graduate.

Now that Brenton has graduated, his ultimate goal is to open an auto shop with his brother, who is currently attending the UTI-Sacramento campus.
