May 7, 2014 - UTI-Norwood Hosts Neponset Valley Chamber of Commerce Education and Business Seminar for High School Students

On April 8, 2014 UTI-Norwood hosted the annual Neponset Valley Chamber of Commerce (NVCC) Education and Business seminar, bringing together 125 students from schools in the Neponset Valley region southwest of Boston to attend panel discussions with members of the local business and education communities. The seminar is planned and offered by The School to Careers Partnership and the NVCC.

Panelists shared their personal stories with students, including their background and career path, what they would have done differently, and gave advice on what students should be thinking about over the next couple of years of their lives.

“The School to Careers Partnership provides connections to students and teachers in all career areas by working with major corporations, local businesses, and organizations through seminars, speakers, site visits, internships, and college guidance,” said Katherine Touafek, Director of The Schools to Careers Partnership. “We are excited to be part of this seminar again this year.”

The NVCC Education and Business seminar featured keynote speaker John Carroll, owner and founder of Carroll Advertising. Panelists included local entrepreneurs and representatives from industries such as banking, insurance, and healthcare. UTI panel participant Joshua Benoit, Local Marketing Manager – Northeast for UTI, shared his experiences that led him to a career in automotive technology and education.

“It’s important for high school students to understand that the career they decide to pursue when they’re a high school senior may or may not be what they end up doing in the long-term. It’s OK to change their minds and end up doing something different. They need to realize that a change in their educational or career choice is creating a new opportunity for success,” said Benoit. “Educational field trips like the NVCC seminar expose students to a wide variety of educational and career options.”
