July 17, 2014 - MMI-Orlando Student Wins 2014 Jeremy McGrath Scholarship

MMI-Orlando student Cameron Goins has his eyes set on becoming the best motorcycle technician for a Supercross team.

After being awarded the 2014 Jeremy McGrath $20,000 scholarship, which will be applied to his MMI tuition, he will be one step closer to getting the necessary education he needs to be successful.

“Graduating from high school in Dover, Fla. and going straight into MMI is the best decision I’ve ever made,” said Goins, who graduated high school with a 5.3 GPA. “Now, I’m excited that this scholarship is going to help me pursue my dreams.”

Each year, MMI teams up with seven-time Supercross champion Jeremy McGrath to provide the scholarship opportunity for current and prospective students. Applicants are asked to submit a two-minute video explaining why they deserve the scholarship and are given the option to provide their explanation in a song, skit, poem, or any way they see fit.

For Cameron, the best way to express his desire was to do what he loved … riding and repairing bikes. The beginning of his submission was inspired by many of McGrath’s free riding videos. The piece then transitions into a one-on-one “get-to-know-me” segment and ends by showcasing Cameron’s technical skills while at work. A job, by the way, that he works full-time along with a heavy school schedule.

After reviewing more than 50 submissions, McGrath selected Cameron’s video as the winner.

“We’re thrilled that Cameron achieved this accomplishment,” said Steve McElfresh, campus president at UTI/MMI-Orlando. “His determination to succeed speaks volumes about his passion and commitment for this industry.”
