July 22, 2014 - NASCAR Tech Educator Judges SkillsUSA National Championship

NASCAR Technical Institute Education Manager John Holly recently served as a judge in the Automotive Service Technology division at the SkillsUSA National Championships in Kansas City, Mo., the showcase for the best career and technical students in the nation. SkillsUSA is an organization that prepares high school and college students for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations.

The competition in the Automotive Service Technology sector gives students exposure to careers in the automotive service industry, helps them hone their skills, and connects them to leading providers of technical education like Universal Technical Institute.

Holly is the first judge in the competition’s automotive division from Universal Technical Institute. He has served as a judge for several competitions on the regional and state levels, and was honored to be given the opportunity to judge on a national level.  The role comes naturally to Holly, who created the Top Tech Challenge – a UTI initiative spearheaded four years ago that has now been adopted by 11 of UTI’s campuses across the country. Open to any high school in the country, the challenge calls on students to complete short tests assessing their knowledge of vehicle parts, diagnostics, brakes and electrical systems.

“John has a true passion for helping students succeed,” said Jennifer Waber, Campus President at NASCAR Technical Institute. “He’s talented at cultivating potential and developing top-notch talent. Competitions like the SkillsUSA National Championships are a great opportunity for John to extend his talent beyond our campus.”

This year, Universal Technical Institute sponsored the inaugural STEM, Skills and Strategies Workshop during the SkillsUSA National Leadership Conference. The workshop focused on identifying and promoting STEM in the technical curriculum along with the introduction of a new Career Readiness Curriculum offered through SkillsUSA.
